North Bergen Has Interesting Ideas

North Bergen has a very informative web site for its parking authority. It includes the application for a resident parking permit. And North Bergen requires that residents have New Jersey driver's licenses with their North Bergen addresses and auto registration with North Bergen addresses.

Another nice feature is that they have daily and monthly visitor permits. The daily permits cost $2.00 a day and the monthly ones cost $30.00 a month. Seems like a good way to cut down on abuse of visitor parking permits.

How They Do It in Hoboken

Hoboken cracked down on nonresident parking by designating one side of every street for resident parking only. Here's what the Hoboken parking ordinance says:

WHEREAS, the City of Hoboken recognizes the needs for additional parking for the residents of the City; and

WHEREAS, the City of Hoboken will work whenever possible to increase the availability of on street parking for Hoboken residents.

What a concept!

Tales of Parking Woes

Yes, even back as far as 2000 the difficulty of parking in Weehawken was documented by The New York Times in the New Jersey section.

But a friend of mine who used to lived in Weehawken, where overnight parking was allowed, said that was even worse. The sound of neighbors jockeying for rare parking spots in the middle of the night agitated her so much she moved her bedroom to the back of the house. Once a neighbor, angry at her parking job, came after her with a tire iron. And he was a policeman.

Seems like it should be time to do something about the problem.

Am I the only resident of Weehawken who can never find a place to park my car?

Am I the only resident of Weehawken who sees many, many, many nonresidents with Weehawken stickers on their cars, parked on Weehawken streets?

Am I the only resident of Weehawken who wishes the authorities would enforce the weak parking laws we already have?

Am I the only resident of Weehawken who would like to see tougher parking laws so our community isn't just a "park and ride" lot for commuters from New Jersey who don't want to pay Lincoln Tunnel tolls?

Am I the only resident of Weehawken who fears the situation will become much worse when Mayor Mike Bloomberg gets congestion pricing implemented in New York City?
